10 Quick Ways to Fill Your Home With Good Vibes Using Vastu & Feng Shui Principles

We’re more connected to our homes than we realise. When it comes to our home interiors, we want it to exude peace and calmness. Both Vastu and Feng Shui believe that everything is alive, including our spaces, and seek to create harmony and balance between people and their immediate environments. Happy energy = happy home. Don’t you agree?

Easy Vastu and Feng Shui Tips For Your Home

Here are some easy to incorporate hacks that you can get started with right away.

1. Entrance

The one thing all practices agree on is that the entrance to your home is an important space, not to be ignored. It’s where energy enters your house, so make sure it’s clear of clutter, wiped down, dusted and cleaned, that it’s well lit, and add plants or a rug to brighten up the space and make it more inviting.

2. Natural Light

Letting in as much natural light as possible is an immediate energiser, whether you’re following Feng Shui/Vastu or not. Clean your windows regularly (try a quick homemade mix of white vinegar, water, maybe even a few drops of essential oil) so there’s no dirt and grime obstructing energy flow.

3. Vertical Lines

According to Feng Shui, which places significant importance on shapes, adding vertical lines in your home encourages growth, expansion, and abundance. Easy ways to incorporate this into your existing setup include upright furniture, tall up-lights, long bookcases, plants that grow upwards.

4. Plants

If you’re a regular reader of Hipcouch’s magazine, you already know that we’re obsessed with plants, especially when it comes to adding some life to indoor spaces. According to Feng Shui, “plants embody life energy” which means that they connect us to nature, and bring in good health and vitality. If you’re new to this, we have a whole list of minimal-fuss plants for you to start with here.

5. White Flowers

Fresh flowers in the house in general always turn the energy around in any space, but Vastu leans heavily towards white flowers, which it believes have the power to absorb negative energy and cleanse the space they’re in. Don’t forget to change the flowers and water regularly to keep your flowers fresh and smelling great.

6. Essential Oils

Natural extracts from plants and flowers have long been used to appease the senses, and have positive effects on the mind and body. This can only ever lead to increased health and happiness—at the very least, a good mood—and a profusion of delicious smells wafting through your home.

7. Candles

Experts suggest you light a candle every evening in your home, whether or not you’re aiming for a romantic vibe. As the candles burn, they are thought to take negative vibes with them.

Pro-tip: Get a scented candle/essential oils diffuser to simultaneously fill your home with a soothing fragrance.

8. Salt

Danish author Karen Blixen (also known by her pen name Isak Dinesen) once said that “the cure for anything is saltwater—sweat, tears, or the sea.

Vastu keeps it simple. Here, the answer is simply salt. Add a sprinkling of good old salt to the corners of every room and leave it there for a few minutes to work its magic (ie. to attract and absorb negative energy). After a few minutes, sweep up the salt and wash it under running water to cleanse your home of bad vibes.

9. Aloe Vera

The medicinal benefits of the gentle aloe vera (moisturising, healing) were already compelling. Add to that the Vastu belief that it also has the power to absorb and neutralise any negative energy. It's decorative, easy to maintain, and we don’t know what you’re waiting for.

10. Sacred Space

Whatever your faith is, allocate a sacred space in an otherwise undisturbed corner of your home. A corner to pause and reflect, to pray, to send out gratitude, to still your mind. According to the Vastu, idols, and images of deities have the power to absorb the negative energies of their surroundings. But if you’re more a healing crystals and candles kind of person, they do the job too.
